A family reflects on over a decade of welcoming au pairs into their home.
For 11 years, one HBN host family has opened their home—and their hearts—to au pairs from all over the world. What started as a practical solution for childcare has grown into something much deeper: a journey filled with cultural exchange, connection, and lifelong memories.
We spoke with the family about their experience, what they’ve learned along the way, and why they continue to welcome new au pairs year after year.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding for our whole family”
Looking back on more than a decade of hosting, the family reflects on what has meant the most to them.
“The warmth and love that every au pair has given our children has been incredibly special. Alongside that, the flexibility of having an au pair has helped us balance work, school, and family life.”
For them, hosting has always been about more than practical support. It has been about creating a home where children feel cared for, supported, and surrounded by positive role models from different parts of the world.
A steady presence during busy family years
Raising young children while managing work and daily life can be challenging—but having an au pair brought stability and calm into their home.

Advice for future host families
When asked what advice they would give to families considering hosting an au pair, their answer is simple but powerful: communication.
“Communication is key. Make your au pair feel at home, check in regularly, and encourage her to speak openly. Every year has its challenges, and that’s okay—working through them together builds stronger relationships.”
They emphasise that no experience is perfect, but openness, patience, and mutual respect make all the difference in building a successful match.
