A family reflects on over a decade of welcoming au pairs into their home<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For 11 years, one HBN host family has opened their home\u2014and their hearts\u2014to au pairs from all over the world. What started as a practical solution for childcare has grown into something much deeper: a journey filled with cultural exchange, connection, and lifelong memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spoke with the family about their experience, what they\u2019ve learned along the way, and why they continue to welcome new au pairs year after year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been incredibly rewarding for our whole family\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back on more than a decade of hosting, the family reflects on what has meant the most to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe warmth and love that every au pair has given our children has been incredibly special. Alongside that, the flexibility of having an au pair has helped us balance work, school, and family life.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

For them, hosting has always been about more than practical support. It has been about creating a home where children feel cared for, supported, and surrounded by positive role models from different parts of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A steady presence during busy family years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raising young children while managing work and daily life can be challenging\u2014but having an au pair brought stability and calm into their home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHaving an au pair helped keep our family steady during the busy years of raising young children. They received so much extra love and attention\u2014and children can never have too much of that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Learning through cultural exchange<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, each au pair became part of the family rhythm\u2014helping with routines, sharing daily life, and becoming a trusted and valued presence in the household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most meaningful parts of the experience has been the cultural exchange that comes with every new au pair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery au pair brought her own background and personality into our home. Saying goodbye after a year was always emotional, but welcoming someone new brought fresh energy and another wonderful cultural exchange.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Each year brought something different\u2014new traditions, new perspectives, and new ways of seeing the world. For the family, this constant exchange has been one of the greatest gifts of hosting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advice for future host families<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked what advice they would give to families considering hosting an au pair, their answer is simple but powerful: communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCommunication is key. Make your au pair feel at home, check in regularly, and encourage her to speak openly. Every year has its challenges, and that\u2019s okay\u2014working through them together builds stronger relationships.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

They emphasise that no experience is perfect, but openness, patience, and mutual respect make all the difference in building a successful match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
